Social Support
Clients of Live Inspired Counseling & Support have the opportunity to participate in the support and wellness programs of partner organization Live Inspired Brevard, a 501c3 nonprofit that Christina Tecson founded to help foster emotional healing through social support and create a sense of community.
Having a network of both peers who have similar experiences or walked a similar path, as well as health professionals who understand the physical and psychological mechanisms working against you, can bolster one’s confidence, increase optimism and motivation, reduce the impact of stress, improve functioning, and lead to improvements in quality of life.
High Social Support correlates positively with:
• Resilience to stress
• Active coping mechanisms
• Less age-related cognitive decline
• Higher cardiovascular functioning
• Higher neuroendocrine functioning
• Higher immune system functioning
With a mission to connect, support, educate, and empower underserved or disadvantaged people affected by chronic health conditions, Live Inspired Brevard focuses on 5 pillars of social support—emotional, esteem, social network, informational, and tangible support.
These services provide a comforting place where people can connect with others to gain emotional support, as well as resources and education to help them manage their chronic health conditions and challenging life circumstances.
Emotional & Esteem
Especially during stressful times, knowing “you are not alone” and having a sense of belonging reinforced with empathy and understanding can make a huge difference to bring joy back to your life. Interacting within a community to seek and give support inevitably leads to expressions of encouragement and feelings of optimism and confidence. Esteem support includes providing affirmations, giving compliments; celebrating successes; reminding someone of strengths, challenging negative self-talk; while emotional support includes hugs, listening and empathizing, and simply being caring and present for a person—all common interactions within a support network.
Peer Support Groups
Organized peer support groups--currently a breast cancer support group, two cancer support groups for any type of cancer, and a chronic pain support group--allow clients to experience commonality with similar life circumstances and health conditions, find empathy discussing shared concerns, and gain motivation to practice effective coping methods. Clients help heal each other with the assistance of a mental health professional to facilitate; or some groups may be co-led by peer volunteers.
